Our Lindenwood Park Neighborhood Association (LPNA) Community Garden is growing. We started with 11 beds in 2012. On Saturday, April 6, 2013, Lindenwood Park Neighborhood Association (LPNA) Community Garden members, new and continuing, as well as LPNA board members Lindsay Alsop, Doug Dick, and Tim Nowell joined together to install nine more raised beds in our Community Garden.
Gateway Greening had a load of leaf mulch and compost delivered on Friday, April 5, and arrived at 8:30 am on Saturday to deliver the remaining items awarded at the Gateway Greening Award Ceremony in February.
Our award included:
- nine 4′ x 10′ x 10” raised beds
- one digging fork
- one 100′ hose
- one 50′ hose
- a load of leaf mulch
- a load of compost
- one gas weed trimmer
We are also very pleased to announce that Gateway Science Academy has installed a raised-bed plot in our community garden this year. We hope to see our youth program grow.
Our LPNA Community Garden has grown to accommodate 20 gardeners. Some of our members have already planted early spring vegetables and herbs—lettuce, basil, kale, cauliflower, radishes, parsley, peppers, sage, dill, cabbage, chives, and onions. Some of our seeds are coming up. We hope to see more soon.
To become a community gardener, our members must sign a garden guidelines document which obligates them to maintain their raised-bed plot, contribute to community garden maintenance, report their vegetable weights, pay an annual fee for the growing season, and do their best to contribute volunteer hours with Gateway Greening.
In fall 2013, we will once again submit a grant application to Gateway Greening for more raised beds to be installed in the spring. Please keep us in mind and let us know if you are interested in joining us—Sharon Panian and Milton Murry, mardelusa03@yahoo.com.
